Job Summary:
Vertex Solutions is seeking a Engineering Manager who will be responsible for human resource management of Engineers, as well as providing technical leadership and governance of development activities consistent with architectural and product development standards. This role contributes to the ongoing development of standards and processes to ensure quality. The ideal candidate will be expected to direct and collaborate with subordinates, providing and/or clarifying technical approaches, and assisting in the overall development of technical skills. This role contributes to defining architecture and technology, auditing development work, and overseeing the proper implementation thereof. The Engineering Manager will have broad experience in many aspects of product development, quality approaches, and implementation frameworks. The successful candidate will have a passion for people, product development, quality, and the drive to accomplish their goals.
Essential Functions:

- Complement the Senior Vice President of Solutions in providing technical leadership, collaborating with architects and engineers towards the development of products and ensuring employee growth and retention goals.
- Track and enhance the overall health of the engineering organization.
- Work with engineers to develop and/or confirm architecture decisions, design decisions, and implementation approaches.
- Work with internal customers and product management to identify and clarify product requirements.
- Manage scope and deliverables for the technical side of the product roadmap.
- Direct team members to focus on highest-priority/highest-impact projects and development tasks.
- Lead recruiting efforts.
- Identify, review, and incorporate opportunities for process improvements and efficiencies and drive the adoption of high value improvements within the team.
- Manage time effectively with minimal supervision to accurately document solutions and scope projects while ensuring that commitments are met.
- Collaborate with operations, QA, support and product to resolve production issues.
Competencies
- Ability to successfully manage and meet multiple, simultaneous project deadlines in a fast-paced environment
- Experience with various forms of product development and management (Agile, etc.)
- Experience with various forms of configuration management (Git, etc.)
- Strong understanding of the fundamentals of engineering principles and how to apply them to design and develop robust, efficient, scalable, and maintainable applications
- Ability to prioritize multiple tasks while demonstrating the initiative to complete projects with minimum supervision
- Ability to work independently and as part of a project team
- Ability to change and adapt to new or changing project requirements
Required Education, Experience, and Skills:
9+ years of experience with 5+ years of experience within a project management role.
- Proven track record of successfully leading and delivering projects of varying complexity. Deep understanding of project management principles, methodologies, and best practices.
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Engineering, Computer Science, or equivalent
- Experience with software programming languages
- Experience with various forms of product development and management (Agile, etc.)
- Experience with various forms of configuration management (Git, etc.)
- Strong understanding of the fundamentals of engineering principles and how to apply them to design and develop robust, efficient, scalable, and maintainable applications
- Strong collaboration and communication skills within distributed project teams
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Strong problem solving, analytical, and debugging skills
- Ability to work effectively under pressure, independently, and within a collaborative team-oriented environment using sound judgment in decision-making
- Ability to work in a fast-paced, time-critical work environment
- Ability to obtain government security clearance required, active clearance a plus
Supervisory Responsibility
This position has supervisory responsibility over a team of engineers.
Work Environment
This job operates in an office or home office environment.
Physical Demands

The employee is frequently required to stand, walk, stoop, and kneel. The employee must be able to lift and carry up to 10 pounds as needed. Specific vision abilities required by this position include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth vision, and the ability to adjust focus.
Position Type/Expected Hours of Work:
Some flexibility in hours is allowed, but the employee must be available during the “core” work hours of 0900 – 1600 (Central). Occasional evening and weekend work may be required as job duties demand.
Travel:
Limited travel is expected for this position (3 – 5 times per year).
Work Authorization/Security Clearance:

Background checks- criminal, civil, employment, and education required. Drug screening in compliance with drug-free workplace standards. Ability to obtain a federal government clearance when required for projects.
