Addressing the Pilot Shortage Through Community Collaboration
24 August 2022 (Niceville, FL) – Vertex Solutions, a leading integrator of high-fidelity learning solutions including extended reality (XR) training, hosted our US Representative Congressman Matt Gaetz, community leaders, and the Defense Innovation Unit to discuss novel approaches to address the worldwide pilot shortage. The pilot shortage has quickly become an issue of national security threatening US dominance in military, transportation, and cargo aviation.
Congressman Gaetz, requested a meeting with Vertex Solutions to understand how the XR pilot training solutions we are delivering to Air Force and Navy could be expanded to benefit the military more broadly and create dual use technology to address the commercial aviation pilot shortage. Vertex Solutions presented our approach for integrating physical aircraft avionics into our XR aircraft simulator to create a pathway to FAA certification for XR simulators. Light-weight, small-footprint, low-cost XR simulators provide pilot trainees with greater access to high-fidelity simulators delivering demonstrably higher proficiency in less time. The Defense Innovation Unit, Northwest Florida State College (NWFSC) President, Devin Stephenson, One Okaloosa EDC Executive Director, Nathan Sparks, are stakeholders along with Vertex Solutions to bring development of revolutionary aircraft training capability to Northwest Florida and the military.
The solution takes a multi-faceted collaborative approach. First, through a mix of public private partnerships with companies like fixed-wing OEM’s, Bell Helicopter, United Airlines, Breeze Airlines, NWFSC, One Okaloosa EDC, DIU, and AFSOC we believe enough interest will be generated to achieve FAA certification of these devices which will enhance mission readiness and generate better pilots faster closing the gap for lack of well-trained pilots and continuing the nations lead in aviation dominance. Second, increasing funding for organizations like DIU and Air Force Special Operations Command (AFSOC) is the first step to achieving change.
